Fledgling FBI agent Clarice Starling has been chosen by her boss Jack Crawford for a special task: to find a serial killer nicknamed Buffalo Bill, who murders and skins his victims. Crawford believes that the deranged psychiatrist Lecter, who is locked up in a very old maximum-security prison, may know the killer's identity. He sends Clarice (armed with a fake survey questionnaire) to question Lecter in hope that Lecter will be intrigued by her, and therefore be unable to resist a little game of quid-pro-quo.
This box-office hit won five oscars and earned a lot of money, it's a perfectly constructed psychological thriller. Look out for small roles by Chris Isaak and Roger Corman.
Demme's first feature was the women-in-prison exploiter "Caged Heat" starring Linda Blair… things sure change!
Investigation finished: 2001-01-11
Story: 10/10 - This thriller is definitely the "Psycho" of the 90's, I just know that somehow the sequel is gonna suck!.
Acting: 10/10 - Winning an oscar playing a cannibal must have been quite surreal. Nonetheless Hopkins and Foster are brilliant.
Violence: 4/10 - The violence is mostly off-screen, but there's one nasty scene with a mangled body that you'll have a hard time forgetting.
Nudity: 0/10 - Cool it, you slobbering prick! Jodie is NOT that kind of girl.
Coolness: 9/10 - This should be used as an example on how to make an entertaining and commercial thriller.
